- Tombstone dates: July 2, 1829 - March 21, 1902
Mrs. Peter Lucius came to America from Belgium in December of 1859. She was a widow with four children: one boy and three girls. all under the age of eighteen. Catherine traveled to America on the same boat was Mary Mann's parents and all her siblings from Bavaria
Her maiden name was Catherine Shultz (sometimes spelled Kathryn) and was the daugther of Henry and Mary (Mulliton) Shultz. She was born June 7, 1810 in Belgium and died January 31, 1903 at Melmore Street, Tiffin, Seneca County, Ohio. SHe is buried in her son's plot in St. Joseph Cemetary in Tiffin, Ohio. but there are not dates on her gravemarker.
Two of the little daugthers (Catherine & Elizabeth) of Peter and Catherine (Shultz) Lucius took a fever while on the boat coming to the United States, and they never fully recoverd. Both died before June 1860, shortly after their arrival in Ohio and buried in St. Joseph Cemetary, Tiffin, Ohio. At one time they had tombstones which were inscribed in German, but these could not be located.
Once Catherine (Shultz) Lucius first moved to Tiffin, Ohio, she lived with her brother Peter Shultz and his wife Jane (Mann). Then she and her daugther moved to town in teh First Ward of Tiffin, Ohio. They lived in a small apartment in the Joseph Steur house.
Joseph Steur was born around 1819 in Austria and he owned a grocery store. His wife Catherine, and athey had children named Macey, Catherine, Sopher, Victoria, and Frank. He had a prosperous business, so it can be assumed that Catherine and Jane Lucius could have been part-time employed by his wife.
Mrs. Peter (Catherine) Lucius and her remaining daughter, Jannetta (Jane) left Seneca county and moved to Cleveland, Ohio to pursue their careers. Catherine was a tailoress and Jane a dressmaker. It is said that while living in Cleveland, Catherine and her daugther lived in a four-apartment house on Broadway. Jane never married and she died comparativey young from cancer. She is buried in Cleveland, Ohio. After the death of this daughter, Catherine returned to Tiffin, Ohio where she lived the rest of her life. She rented an apartment in the house of Fran Steur ( son of Joseph Steur) in Ward 4 on Sycamore Street.
Catherine Shultz Lucius could not speak English, there always lived with other people. Besides the fact that she probably brought no household furnishings with here, neither did she have a husband to provided for her and her children. From all records, it seams apparent that she never remairried.
Catherine (Shultz) Lucius is listed in 1860, 1870 and 1900 census of Seneca County, Ohio.
When she moved back to Tiffin, Ohio, she rented an apartment in the house of Frank Steur (mentioned above) in Ward 4 on Sycamore Street. Frank was born August 1868 in Ohio of parents born in Austria, and his wife Mary was born October 1874 in Ohio of parents born in Germany.
